How to Choose Your Website Design

Making the right design choice means understanding your audience, your content, your business goals, and just as importantly, what feels right for you or your brand. Here's a framework to help you decide, but remember: personal preference and what resonates with you matter too.

Why These Design Choices?

As you navigate through the Blue Penguin Digital website, you'll notice a consistent look and feel. The layout, styling, and theming you experience aren't random, they're the result of intentional choices that reflect both my personal preferences and our brand identity. Here's why things look the way they do:

  • Card-Based Layout: I chose a card-based layout because, as a millennial, I love the clarity and organisation it brings, plus, it just feels modern and easy to scan.
  • 😀 Icons & Emojis: Icons and emojis are a big part of how I communicate. They make the site feel friendlier and more engaging to me (and hopefully to you too!).
  • Dark Blue Theme: The deep blue background is a nod to both my favourite colour and our brand name, Blue Penguin Digital.
  • 🟧 Orange Accent: The orange accent comes straight from the penguin's beak! It's a fun, brand-driven pop of colour that ties everything together.
  • 💬 Conversational Language: I write like I'm having a chat with a friend. No corporate jargon, no formal business speak - just clear, friendly language that makes you feel welcome. We use UK English spelling and keep things simple and approachable.

Decision Framework

Audience

  • Who are your target users?
  • What devices do they use?
  • What's their technical comfort level?
  • What are their expectations?

Content

  • How much content do you have?
  • What type of content (text, images, video)?
  • How often do you update?
  • What's your content strategy?

Business Goals

  • What is the main purpose of your website?
  • What actions do you want users to take?
  • How will you measure success?

Brand Personality

  • What emotions should your site evoke?
  • What colours, fonts, and imagery represent your brand?
  • Is your tone formal, friendly, playful, etc.?
Tip: Start with your business goal, then align your content and design to support that goal. A clear brand personality helps your site stand out.
