30 years of experience.
A website that looked like it was built in 30 minutes.
How we turned Astral CCTV's rebrand into a custom static site that loads in under a second and scores 98/100 on PageSpeed.
The "White Van Man" Fear
Between them, Satyne, David, and Phil have 50 years of hands-on CCTV installation experience. They protect homes and businesses across Wakefield, Pontefract, Castleford, and the wider Five Towns. They're authorised AJAX alarm installers. They turn up when they say they will. They guarantee every job for 12 months.
In February 2022, David and Phil took the reins of Astral CCTV — a business founded in 1990 by Steve Atherton. They inherited 30 years of local trust, verified customer reviews, and deep technical expertise. They also inherited a website that looked like someone had pasted a brochure into a Word document and uploaded it without formatting.
The old site was plain. No real content. No brand. No mobile optimisation. For a company whose entire value proposition is trust, reliability, and expertise, the website was a credibility gap — the kind of site that makes you wonder if the business is still operating, or if the bloke in the white van is going to turn up at all.
What was holding them back
- ✗Old multi-page site with no formatting — described as "like a badly formatted PDF"
- ✗Zero brand integration — no voice, no visual identity, nothing that differentiated Astral
- ✗No mobile optimisation — in an industry where most enquiries come from phones
- ✗No trust signals — customer reviews buried, no team photos, no proof of expertise
- ✗Generic content — nothing about the Five Towns roots or what makes David and Phil different
The Soul: Serious Tech. Local Trust.
David, Phil, and Satyne didn't want a flashy rebrand. They wanted something that told the truth.
The Look
Dark navy base. Gold accents for brand highlights and CTAs. The existing eye-shield logo — already recognisable locally — stayed. Orbitron for headings to signal precision and technical competence. Premium feel, but grounded. Not a luxury brand. A highly trusted local one.
The Voice
Straight-talking. Plain English. Short sentences. Name the streets, the towns, the area. Prove every claim with a real customer review, a specific metric, or a verifiable fact. Never "cutting-edge solutions". Always "here's what we do, here's how long it takes, here's what it costs."
30 Years of Five Towns History
The brand story became: 30 years of Five Towns history. 50 years of combined field experience. Two directors who've been on the tools since the beginning. If your property's in Wakefield, Pontefract, Castleford, Leeds, or Rothwell — we've probably worked on your street. This wasn't invented for marketing. It was already true. The website just needed to say it out loud.
The Fix: The Security Engine
No WordPress. No page builders. Custom static HTML and PHP, built with the same precision Astral applies to commercial CCTV systems.
The Brain
A Node.js build system that recursively walks the directory tree, injects shared header, footer, and cookie consent components into every page, then recalculates and rewrites all relative paths based on each file's depth. Change the phone number once, rebuild, and it updates across 15+ pages in under two seconds.
The Banker
PHP contact form with multi-layer validation. Two emails per enquiry — one structured quote-request to Astral with customer details, one confirmation to the customer so they know it went through. SMTP credentials live in a .env file outside version control. No secrets in the codebase. Ever.
The Speed
WebP images throughout with PNG fallbacks. Critical resources preloaded to eliminate render-blocking. Alpine.js handles all interactivity in 15 KB. Tailwind CSS purges unused utility classes in production. Cache-buster script forces fresh downloads on every deploy. The result: a site that feels instant, even on rural 4G in the Five Towns.
A website that finally matches 30 years of reputation
The old site said nothing about who Astral actually were. 30 years of experience. 50 years of combined field knowledge. Hundreds of verified customer reviews. None of it was on the website. It may as well have not existed.
The new build changed that. LocalBusiness schema on every page. Location pages for Wakefield, Leeds, Pontefract, Castleford, and Rothwell. 100/100 SEO score. llms.txt for AI discoverability. A 98/100 PageSpeed score that says "we take care over details". The website finally does what the business has always done: prove its worth, without having to say a word.
The Speed Shift
Multi-second load on the old site became sub-1-second perceived speed on the new one. Critical resources preloaded, WebP images with PNG fallbacks, lazy loading below the fold, Tailwind CSS purged of unused utilities. The site loads instantly — even on rural 4G in the Five Towns. That matters for a company whose customers are often checking on a phone while standing outside a property.
The Credibility Shield
The old site looked abandoned. Plain text, no brand, no trust signals. The new one wears Astral's navy and gold identity on every page. Team photos so customers know who's turning up. Customer reviews embedded on every service page. The 12-month guarantee featured prominently. A contact form that sends confirmation emails. Every signal says: we're real, we're local, and we've been doing this for decades.
Developer Insight // Winston
"The component injection system was the hardest part. Unlike a framework where paths resolve automatically, we had to recursively calculate directory depth, generate '../' prefix strings, and rewrite every href and src attribute in injected markup to match each file's location. Get it wrong once and half the site's images break. Built a test suite that checks 15 output files after every build to catch regressions before deployment."
What they said
"Rob was very helpful designing our site, had plenty of ideas. Made changes as requested. Went out of his way to make sure everything was exactly how we wanted the site to look and sound. Highly recommended."— Satyne Jones-Newton, Office Manager, Astral CCTV

"The build system here is the real flex. Most agencies install a theme and call it done. We built a pipeline that assembles components, rewrites paths recursively, and ships HTML so clean it loads in under a second on rural 4G. That's the kind of care a 30-year-old business deserves."
