We're Not an Agency.
We Never Were.
One developer. One golden retriever. One AI sidekick who started life as a voice-controlled orb on a desk in Wakefield. That's the whole team — and that's exactly how we like it.
The Honest Reason We Started
When Rob founded Blue Penguin Digital in January 2025, he'd just left his last role and had time to think.
And what he thought about was websites.
Not his own — everyone else's. The endless scroll of templated, copy-paste pages that all look the same, say nothing specific, and do next to nothing for the businesses behind them. "Coming Soon" placeholders sitting there for three years. Contact forms that go nowhere. Navigation that breaks on mobile. Sites that look passable at a glance and quietly cost their owners customers every day.
It bothered him. A lot.
Rob had spent years in service management and building internal solutions that actually had to work — Python scripts, Power BI dashboards, SQL pipelines, and a bespoke CRM built in PHP from scratch. He knew what properly built software looked like. He knew the difference between something built to function and something built to look like it functions.
So he started Blue Penguin Digital with one rule: every website we build has a job to do. No dead pages. No templates dressed up as bespoke work. No missing pieces. No "close enough."
If it ships with our name on it, it works.
Rob
Developer. Founder. The Person Who Actually Answers the Phone.
Rob builds every site himself.
Not "our team of developers." Not "our talented engineers." Rob. Specifically.
Before Blue Penguin Digital, he spent years as a service manager and internal solutions provider — someone whose job was to make complicated business processes actually work. Python automation. Power BI reporting. SQL. A bespoke CRM built in PHP from the ground up. The kind of work where "close enough" isn't an option, because when it fails it breaks someone's actual business.
That background shapes how every project at Blue Penguin Digital runs. Rob doesn't think like a designer who picked up some code. He thinks like someone who's been accountable for real systems producing real results. Fast load times aren't a preference — they directly affect how Google ranks your site and whether visitors stay long enough to enquire. Clean code isn't perfectionism — it's the reason your site doesn't get hacked.
You'll get his direct number. You'll speak to him when you WhatsApp. When something needs sorting — and in any long-running project, something eventually does — you'll hear from him first. Not a ticket queue. Not a junior account manager. Rob.

Dave
Head of Morale. Employee of the Month (48 Consecutive Months and Counting).
Dave is a golden retriever. He didn't apply for the job — it was always his.
Rob looked at other web agencies and saw a parade of faceless stock photography, corporate headshots, and "our team" pages that told you nothing real about the people behind them. He wanted Blue Penguin Digital to feel different from the very start. Dave is the most effective possible antidote to that kind of blandness.
He specialises in crumb detection, stress reduction during long debugging sessions, and sleeping on the job in a way that somehow improves the atmosphere for everyone in the room. He has never once missed a deadline, though this is largely because he isn't directly responsible for any.
He doesn't write code. He doesn't sit in on client calls. But he is always here — and this studio is measurably better for it.

Winston
AI Marketing Manager. Origin Story: Passion Project.
Winston didn't start out as a marketing manager. He started as a personal experiment that had nothing to do with Blue Penguin Digital.
Long before the studio existed, Rob built him for himself — a voice-controlled, LLM-connected assistant running on a PC at home. No face. Just an animated ethereal orb. It could manage Spotify, check calendars, and hold a proper conversation. Rob's own version of Iron Man's JARVIS, built from scratch because the technology was genuinely interesting and building things is what Rob does in his spare time.
Over the years, Winston evolved. By the time Blue Penguin Digital launched, the agents Rob had been quietly building were a natural part of how the studio worked: brand consistency checks, SEO audits, content drafts, early issue detection. The physical Winston — the knitted mascot version who now sits on Rob's desk — was made by Rob's sister-in-law. It's about as far from "enterprise AI platform" as it's possible to get, and that's entirely the point.
We're transparent about how AI works here because Rob built Winston himself and understands exactly what it does — and what it doesn't. Winston produces drafts. Rob makes the judgements. Nothing ships without a human decision behind it.
If you've had bad experiences with AI content that sounded hollow and felt wrong, that's a process problem, not a technology problem. The technology is only as good as the judgment applied to it.

Proudly Based in Wakefield.
Properly, Not Just on Paper.
Rob has lived in Wakefield for over 20 years.
That's not a location tag on a Google Business Profile. It's why Blue Penguin Digital has invested real time in local organisations — from the D.E.S.T Football Academy to the Play, Grow, Belong family network across all 11 Wakefield districts, to Tasty Not Wasty, the CIC that helps people access food support without shame.
Working with a local developer means you can meet for a coffee before you commit to anything. It means Rob has a genuine stake in your business doing well, because he'll see you about. It means "Yorkshire and beyond" is a description of where the work starts, not a marketing claim stretched to sound bigger than it is.
We work with clients across the UK. Fully remote delivery works fine. But if you're in Wakefield or the wider West Yorkshire area and you'd rather have a face-to-face first — that's always an option.
// organisations we've worked with locally
Three Promises.
All of Them Kept.
Not marketing copy. Things Rob has said directly to every client, before a single line of code was written.
No decision ships without your understanding. Key choices are explained in plain English before anything is built.
We build things that work. Fast load times, clean code, SEO baked in from line one. A working digital asset — not a placeholder with a nice colour scheme.
